What is distributed to paid-in-capital (DPI)?

Distributed to paid-in-capital (DPI) is a financial performance metric that’s used in private equity and venture capital. It measures the amount of capital that is returned to investors, relative to the amount of capital that they’d invested in the fund. The DPI metric provides investors with insights into the realized returns of their investments.

It is calculated as DPI = Paid-In Capital/Cumulative Distributions.

In this equation, “paid-in capital” refers to the total amount of capital that investors have contributed to the fund. “Cumulative distributions” refers to the total amount of cash or stock that has been distributed to investors.
