What is a certified financial advisor (CFA)?

A certified financial advisor (CFA) is a financial professional—a financial analyst, portfolio manager, investment advisor, research analyst or another type of financial expert—who has completed the CFA Program by the CFA Institute. This is a highly respected and globally recognized credential that allows CFAs to analyze investments and legally offer financial advice.

The CFA designation represents a deep understanding of advanced investment analysis and real-world portfolio management skills. That’s because the CFA program focuses on investment analysis, portfolio management, and ethical standards within the financial industry. To become a CFA charterholder, candidates must pass three exams and have four years of relevant work experience in the investment decision-making process. CFAs are bound by a strict code of ethics and standards of professional conduct, which ensure that they act in the best interests of their clients.
